About Our 2026-2027 Season

This season, we’re returning to what makes ensemble singing meaningful: learning beautiful, challenging music and spending time with thoughtful, generous musicians (like you!)

The goal is to build something extraordinary together, with a season designed to give us real time to rehearse, connect, and perform, all while keeping the commitment manageable.

The Timeline

We will have 5 retreat-style, weekend-long rehearsals between September through March. Rehearsals and concerts will take place in a rotating set of locations across the northeast including New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.

There will be 2-3 concert weekends from March to May. Last season, we performed at the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church in New York City (link to video) and The Substation in Boston (link to video).

The Costs

For the past few years we have waived dues to decrease the barrier to entry for members. Members organize their own travel logistics for rehearsals and concerts, but we team up for housing and travel support when possible. To minimize costs, carpooling and homestays are typical and chorus sections take turns providing Saturday lunches. Members often spend the Saturday evening of rehearsal weekends socializing together.

The Audition Process – Open Until August 10, 2026

FAQs

Ensemble Companio is a volunteer community choir open to adults 21 years of age and older, comprised of young professionals, recent graduates, and parents searching for a high-quality post-collegiate choral experience.

We draw talented musicians from all over the Northeastern United States, with slightly heavier concentrations in the Boston, New York, and New Jersey areas.

Ensemble Companio is known for its adventurous programming and vibrant, moving concert experiences. A typical season weaves together unaccompanied repertoire spanning from the medieval period to modern day, highlighting music by historically excluded composers, rarely performed masterworks, and choral gems of all genres.

For many singers, this model provides greater flexibility than the traditional weekly rehearsal model. However, this setup requires greater individual responsibility as singers are expected to study and memorize music between monthly rehearsals. To aid everyone in that effort, we post scores to a choir Wiki, along with part-specific and whole-group practice files, and videos of each rehearsal. Members also meet between rehearsals to hold optional regional sectionals when possible.

Similar to last season, we anticipate not requiring all music to be memorized for our program, though some pieces will be performed from memory, and all pieces are always welcomed to be memorized.

Yes! In fact, many of our members also sing with other organizations.

Donia will give you an overview of the chorus and upcoming season and walk you through the audition process.

Ensemble Companio derives its name from a late Latin form of “companion,” whose etymological meaning is “one with whom one shares bread.” The name reflects our belief that sharing in choral music is an essential, nourishing, and healing endeavor akin to the sharing of food.
